Mother to Be is an original oil painting by contemporary artist Sharmaine Rayner exploring pregnancy, motherhood, new beginnings, intention, and the mysterious connection between mother and child.

A pregnant woman stands surrounded by the ocean, her hair flowing dramatically in the wind as waves move around her. Within her body, the developing baby is visible, creating an intimate and surreal portrayal of the connection between mother and child before birth.

This contemporary surrealist painting was inspired by three women in my life who longed to become mothers. One had been told that she would not be able to have children. As I painted, the woman in the artwork began to take on her likeness. When I eventually shared the painting online, she asked, “Is that me?” I told her, “Yes.”

She later had a beautiful daughter.

I don't claim that the painting had anything to do with her pregnancy, but the coincidence stayed with me. It made Mother to Be a deeply personal exploration of hope, intention, possibility, grace, and the mystery of new life.

The ocean represents the emotional depth and uncertainty surrounding the journey toward motherhood, while the visible baby creates a surreal moment in which the viewer can experience something normally hidden from view.

I created this pregnancy artwork and motherhood painting as a celebration of the extraordinary threshold between who we are and who we are becoming—the moment when one life carries another and the future is already quietly taking shape.
